In the 2017/18 season, we're searching for an answer to the question of: German? What does that actually mean? We have taken the phrase "In good German" as our motto for the season, but added a question mark, thus picking up a theme that is being discussed widely and controversially in the media and by academics today: What is German? What defines the German culture or German identity? Does it exist at all, or are there different identities that characterise a (language) culture through their interplay?
Even if the programme of Theater Erfurt lists performances that are almost exclusively in German, the choice of works shows how far German musical theatre is indebted to the Europe-wide exchange of artists and ideas. In this season, we show how multilingual the authors were who wrote works in German and how diverse their themes are. Theatre, music and, most importantly, opera will always depend on the mobility of artists and on international exchange.
