Rehearsing, performing in concerts and playing in the pit
The Orchestral Academy of the Erfurt Philharmonic Orchestra was established at the start of the 2015/16 season at the suggestion of General Music Director Joana Mallwitz. "Young people who would like to pursue a musical career in an orchestra need practice, and we wish to make that possible", says Ms Mallwitz.
Each season, up to ten young musicians studying at a German music academy can now, after passing an audition, gain practical experience in a professional orchestra (it is possible to extend this for a further year). The bursary covers primarily playing in rehearsals and performances in the area of musical theatre and concerts. The up-and-coming artists are given wide-ranging support by their mentors from the ranks of the Philharmonic Orchestra. They are familiarised with the specific challenges facing a professional musician and experience the atmosphere within the orchestra for themselves.
The students' visits are financed through the orchestral budget of Theater Erfurt and supported by the Thuringian cosmetics manufacturer Herbacin. Support is also provided by the Gesellschaft der Theater- und Musikfreunde Erfurt e.V.
